Position Title: Income Tax Program Volunteer

Department: Outreach, Development and Poverty Reduction
Location: In-Person (DBNC Office)
Position Type: Seasonal (March–April), Flexible Schedule

Purpose:

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) provides free tax preparation services to eligible community members with modest incomes and simple tax situations, as defined by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring equitable access to financial support and resources.

Key Responsibilities (Please identify which role you’re applying for):

Tax Preparer

  • Prepare basic income tax returns for eligible individuals.

Interpreter

  • Facilitate communication between clients and volunteers by translating as needed.

Support Administrative Role

  • Book appointments and manage client scheduling.
  • Allocate clients to available tax preparers.
  • Communicate with tax preparers and coordinators to address concerns.
  • Ensure clients have required documentation and meet eligibility criteria.
  • Organize volunteer files and collect program data.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience working with diverse populations and social service organizations.
  • Comfortable with numbers and basic tax return processing.
  • Training or experience in completing income tax forms.
  • Accounting or bookkeeping experience is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving and independent work skills.
  • Effective time management and organizational abilities.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Patience and professionalism in handling client concerns.
  • Knowledge of a second language is an asset.
  • Clear criminal record check required.

Training & Commitment:

  • Register as a volunteer with DBNC and CRA’s CVITP.
  • Complete CRA-provided training.
  • Minimum commitment of 4 hours per week during tax season (March–April).
  • Clinic operates Monday to Friday during regular office hours.
  • Maintain regular communication with DBNC Coordinator.
