Study Buddy:

The Study Buddy mentoring program connects self-identifying girls, non-binary, transgender, and gender-diverse youth (aged 7-17) with caring adult mentors who act as positive academic role models.

Through this one-on-one support, mentors help youth improve their academic performance, set educational goals, and build self-confidence.

The program requires one tutoring session per week (one hour) for a minimum of six months with sessions taking place at a mutually-agreeable location (e.g. library). The Study Buddy program can run year-round and we encourage matches to agree on a summer schedule to continue building a stronger connection.

The key benefits of the Study Buddy program for girls and gender-diverse youth:

  • Access to an academic role model
  • Increase educational performance and enhanced educational goal-setting
  • Decrease in disruptive behaviour in school

With the support of a Study Buddy mentor, girls and gender-diverse youth are encouraged and equipped to meet their academic goals, which in turn contributes towards better classroom engagement, school confidence and overall self-esteem.

Big Sisters is accepting applications across the Lower Mainland, but we are in high need of volunteers who live or are willing to travel to:
- New Westminster
- Richmond
- Tri-cities
- White-Rock
- Delta
