Volunteer Backend Engineer (Python / Django / PostgreSQL)
Help us build the infrastructure for sharing.
Borrow’d is an open-source, mission-driven platform that helps people share what they already have — tools, gear, appliances, and more — with the people they trust. We’re building a culture of access over ownership, one community at a time.
We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to help us get through our current backlog and set the stage for future features. If you love Python, Django, and data systems — and want to apply those skills to something that matters — this is a great fit.
What you’ll do
Tackle discrete tickets in our Django codebase (mostly backend work, occasional full-stack coordination).
Help refine and strengthen our infrastructure around CI/CD and analytics (incrementally, not on-call DevOps).
Contribute to a clean, maintainable, and extensible backend architecture (PostgreSQL, Django ORM).
Participate asynchronously with a friendly, global team of volunteers who believe in open collaboration.
What you’ll bring
Experience with Python/Django and comfort working in a multi-contributor GitHub repo.
Familiarity with backend dev practices: testing, logging, monitoring, deployment pipelines.
Ability to work independently — pick up a small, well-scoped issue, and see it through.
An interest in sustainability, open-source culture, or building technology for good.
What you’ll get
Flexible, zero-pressure contribution model — plug in a few hours whenever you can.
Experience collaborating in an open-source project (AGPL license, public GitHub repo).
Recognition on the Borrow’d contributor list and the knowledge that your code helps real people share more and waste less.
Tech stack: Django (Python), PostgreSQL, Sentry, GitHub, Tailwind.
Commitment: Short-term volunteer contributor (you choose your hours).
Location: Fully remote / async collaboration.
