Volunteer Posting: Social Media Coordinator (Volunteer)

Sooke Transition House Society (STHS)
Fully Remote • Flexible Schedule • 3–5 hours/week

Start June 2026

Summary

A volunteer role creating monthly Canva content, scheduling posts, and supporting safe, trauma‑informed online engagement for STHS (3–5 hours/week, remote).

About Us

Sooke Transition House Society (STHS) provides safety, advocacy, and healing for women (in all their diversity including trans women) and children impacted by violence. We operate a transition house, community-based programs, and prevention and education initiatives across the Sooke region. Our communications are grounded in trauma‑informed practice, cultural safety, inclusivity, and empowerment.

Social media is one of the ways we connect with our community, share accurate information, promote safety, and raise awareness. We are seeking a committed, creative volunteer to help steward our online presence.

Role Overview

The Social Media Coordinator (Volunteer) creates monthly content, schedules posts, monitors engagement, and helps maintain a safe, empowering online environment for STHS. The role is fully remote, flexible, and requires approximately 3–5 hours per week.

We are hoping someone can begin June 2026, allowing time for overlap and training with our current volunteer.

Key Responsibilities

Content Creation & Scheduling

  • Create a month of content in Canva using STHS branding, messaging, and social media guidelines.
  • Incorporate key dates, awareness days, and priorities provided by the Executive Director (ED).
  • Submit draft posts for ED review and revise as needed.
  • Schedule approved posts across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • Support occasional short-notice or time‑sensitive posts, such as urgent awareness events, community updates, or organizational announcements. These requests are infrequent and clearly identified by the ED.

Engagement & Monitoring

  • Monitor comments on posts and “like” or respond with simple acknowledgements (e.g., “Thank you!”).
  • Flag direct messages or any sensitive or complex interactions to the ED — the volunteer does not provide direct responses to inquiries.
  • This role does not involve crisis response, client communication, or providing support services.
  • Capture screenshots of harmful or inappropriate comments if needed and notify the ED.

Safety, Accessibility & Alignment

  • Apply trauma‑informed, culturally safe, and inclusive communication practices.
  • Add alt-text, captions, and plain-language descriptions to posts.
  • Follow STHS privacy and confidentiality guidelines (no identifiable client information; consent-based media).
  • Ensure content aligns with STHS values and brand voice.

Optional (if interested)

  • Support with basic analytics or engagement summaries.
  • Offer suggestions for growing reach, safety, and community engagement.

Skills & Qualifications

Required

  • Experience creating social media content for organizations or causes.
  • Graphic design skills (Canva Pro access provided).
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and intersectional feminist communication.
  • Comfort with topics related to gender-based violence and community support.
  • Ability to work independently, meet monthly timelines, and communicate proactively.

Assets (not required)

  • Experience with analytics or data tracking.
  • Familiarity with Sooke or the surrounding communities.
  • Prior experience in nonprofit or advocacy communication.

Time Commitment

  • 3–5 hours per week on average
  • Work is fully remote and flexible — complete tasks at the time that suits you
  • Includes both monthly content creation and occasional brief short‑notice requests
  • 12‑month commitment preferred to maintain continuity of voice
  • Start June 2026, with onboarding alongside our current volunteer

What We Provide

  • A warm onboarding process and training overlap with the current Social Media Volunteer
  • Access to our Canva Pro account and brand materials
  • Clear monthly workflows, priorities, and supportive supervision from the ED
  • Trauma‑informed communication guidance and ongoing support
  • Opportunities to contribute meaningfully to gender-based violence prevention and awareness in our community
