Position: English Language Group Facilitator (English for Work)

Location: 3225 Eglinton Ave. E, Unit 101B, Scarborough, ON M1J 2H7

Terms: 1.5 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months; Tuesdays 2:00pm-3:30pm

Scope

Responsible for leading an English Language Learning group focused on employment-related topics. The volunteer facilitates small group discussions and activities to help participants improve workplace communication (emails, phone calls, small talk), learn new vocabulary, gain confidence in speaking, better understand workplace expectations, and practice real-life workplace scenarios.

 

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere
  • Prepare materials for each session suited to the group’s interests and language level
  • Engage participants in conversational style learnings
  • Encourage attendees to practice speaking English
  • Facilitate sessions that remain respectful
  • Provide participants with insights into Canadian culture
  • Give constructive and targeted feedback
  • Ensure client confidentiality is maintained
  • Track attendance of registered participants
  • Report volunteer hours monthly to Programs Manager or designate

 

Qualifications

  • Fluent in English
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs and issues facing newcomers
  • Experience interacting with adult learners in a class or conversation circle setting
  • Experience teaching English to newcomers is a strong asset
  • Has strong communication and interpersonal skills

 

Other requirements

  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check
