Job Summary:

The Employment Counselor is responsible for guiding and supporting newcomers and refugees in their job search journey. By offering personalized employment services, the Employment Counselor empowers clients to access sustainable employment, understand workplace culture, and achieve financial independence within their new communities. This role involves working closely with clients in one-on-one settings, delivering group workshops, and coordinating with community resources to maximize the employment prospects of each participant.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Employment Counseling and Support
    • Conduct individualized sessions with clients to assess career goals, identify skills, and provide job search support.
    • Assist in the preparation of resumes, cover letters, and applications tailored to clients’ career goals.
    • Provide mock interview sessions and feedback to help clients build confidence and readiness.
    • Educate clients on job search platforms (e.g., Government Job Bank, Indeed, LinkedIn) and assist in setting up profiles as needed.
  2. Workshop Facilitation
    • Develop and lead workshops on topics such as resume writing, interview techniques, workplace culture, and legal rights in the workplace.
    • Deliver employment-related orientations that provide an overview of local labor market conditions, in-demand skills, and workplace expectations.
    • Coordinate and facilitate job fairs, employer networking events, and guest speaker sessions to enhance clients’ connections to the job market.
  3. Job Development and Partnerships
    • Build and maintain relationships with local employers and placement agencies to increase job opportunities for clients.
    • Collaborate with community partners to facilitate job placements, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
    • Identify and refer clients to sector-specific training programs to help them meet local job market demands.
  4. Documentation and Reporting
    • Track client progress, document services provided, and maintain detailed case notes.
    • Prepare and submit monthly reports on client engagement, placement outcomes, and workshop attendance.
    • Evaluate program effectiveness through feedback collection and outcome tracking to ensure continuous improvement.
  5. Resource Development
    • Stay updated on local job market trends, government programs, and resources to improve the quality of client support.
    • Develop and curate resources (e.g., guides, handouts) that provide valuable information on job search strategies, labor laws, and workplace expectations.
    • Work with the department to create tailored resource materials to address specific client needs, including multilingual materials where possible.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Social Work, Human Resources, Career Counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience in employment counseling, career coaching, or a similar role, especially with immigrant and refugee populations.
  • Knowledge of local labor market trends and job search resources, including digital platforms and recruitment practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a client-centered approach.
  • Proficiency in French, English, a third language is an asset.

Work Environment: This position is based within a collaborative, community-oriented environment. The Employment Counselor will engage with diverse clients, community organizations, and local employers to fulfill program objectives.
